Racing Classes

Cruiser

Cruiser Racing commenced on Sligo Bay in the mid seventies.  Many of the original Cruiser helms had previously sailed GP 14's at the Club. Over the years the class has matured and now has a good mix competitive Cruiser Racers racing under the IRC rating rule and ISA's ECHO performance handicapping system.

Racing takes place on Wednesday and Friday Evenings.  The Premier Trophy in this Class is The Ladies’ Cup usuall sailed for in August each year.

In 2012, the clubs in Sligo, Mullaghmore and Killybegs got together to create a new racing series under the banner of NORA (Northwest Offshore Racing Association).  This series is a mix of three inshore regattas and two coastal races between the venues and runs from mid July until early August.

In recent years, the Cruiser members made a decision to rejuvenate the fleet by encouraging members to invest in the J24 class.  This boat offers great value keel boat racing, one design and easy to move around for Regional and National events

G.P.14

The G.P.14 was the first Class adopted by Sligo Yacht Club in mid sixties and Sligo sailors travelled extensively to all Regional and National Championships. Sligo has successfully hosting many major GP events over the years and culminating with the World Championships in 2006.  Sligo now has the largest fleet of GP 14s in Ireland.

Mirror

In the mid seventies the Mirror Dinghy was adopted by the Club to form a Junior Class.  The Sligo Mirror sailors have been most successful and have produced many National Champions.   Sligo hosted several Mirror events including World Championships in 1987 and more recently the Europeans Championships in 2010.  The club hosts regional and national events for the Mirror class on an ongoing basis.

Optimist

In 2011, Sligo Yacht Club adopted the Optimist class as a development junior fleet.

Laser

In 2011, Sligo Yacht Club adopted the Laser class as a development fleet.
